Secret Agent 253
The Story of Tarzhe’

The Secret Agent Cows project evolved from the vegetables with attitude series. My characters were all wearing sunglasses. When I think of secret agents, I picture them wearing sun glasses.

So I started chewing on the idea.

When was it that farmers started putting those numbered tags on cows’ ears? The first time I saw that, I remember thinking of the lyrics to Johnny Rivers’ song "Secret Agent Man." "They’ve given him a number and taken away his name!" (Click here!) My secret agents were destined to be cows.

I am acquainted with Paul and Julie Larson who sell beef at the Cameron Park Farmers’ Market. They were nice enough to let me come out to their Sun Ray Farm near Mindoro to take photos of their cows. A few days after the photo shoot, when I sorted through the photos, I came up with three full body photos that would work on my 5x7 secret agent paintings. I texted Julie to ask her to look up the names of cows number 442, 253 and bull 163. She looked them up on the computer and texted back that 253 was named Tarzhet because she had a target-like marking on her forehead. I responded, "Perfect! I just did a painting of her as a secret agent!" I dropped the T at the end of Tarzhet and added the accent to make the pronunciation a little more obvious.

I think she has a heart on her forehead. How pretty!
